Popular biennial garden flower. Large flowering, sweetly- scented double blooms in colourful combinations of reds, pinks, and whites with some bi-coloured. Blooms the year after planting in mid-spring to mid-summer. The beautiful colours and the amazing scent make this Sweet William an ideal cut flower. This tall variety of an old-fashioned favourite is an excellent background plant in beds and borders. Grows best in full sun.

Description

Latin Name – Dianthus barbatus

Sowing Instructions – Indoors – Sow April-May and plant out to flower June-September. HB – Hardy biennial types.

Sow outdoors – April-July, in a seed bed, 0.5cm (¼”) deep, into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Thin seedlings to 5cm (2″) apart, when large enough to handle. Keep moist and weed free. Plant out to flowering position, September-November, allowing 23cm (9″) between plants. Flowers: May to July, the following year.

Hints and Tips –  Ideal for beds and borders. Scented. Attractive to bees. Suitable for cutting. Prefers full sun.
