Papaver – Garden Gnome


Hugely popular dwarf variety of the Icelandic poppy, produces bowl-shaped papery flowers in shades of yellow, white, orange and red over many weeks in summer, above a neat mound of blueish-green foliage. Height and spread 30cm by 15cm. Tends to be short lived, but worth a place for its long and cheerful display. Ideal for the front of a sunny border or rock garden, in any well-drained soil.

Latin Name Papaver nudicaule

Sowing Instructions – Pressing the tip of your finger, make a shallow trench in the soil in which to plant the seeds. Sprinkle the seeds lightly into the trench and dust over with soil. Keep the soil moistened and in a sunny spot until the seeds have germinated. Once germinated and healthily established, thin the plants to around 10 cm apart.

Hints and Tips – Ideal for border and cottage gardens. Attractive plant for bees. Ideal for container plants.
